Meet the artist: Janet Darley

My artistic path began at Medway College of Art, where I completed The Institute of British Designers Award. This qualification not only allowed me to teach art at a local school and adult learning centres but also ignited my passion for painting. Alongside teaching, I continuously honed my skills, focusing on landscapes and botanical studies using watercolour and gouache, often incorporating gold leaf. This dedication led to the development of my unique style, which is now recognised internationally. I've been honoured to exhibit at prestigious galleries and competitions, including The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition and The Threadneedle Prize.

My creative process for a new landscape piece typically begins en plein air, where I create tonal and small colour sketches. These initial studies are then brought back to my studio, serving as the foundation for a larger work. The first step involves blocking in the initial colours using washes of watercolour. Following this, I meticulously add detail using gouache and fine brushes. Each painting is a labour of love, taking approximately one month to complete, ensuring every detail contributes to the overall immersive experience.
